Leave a small item — a tissue packet is the classic choice — on a table to reserve it while you queue. It's respected universally; don't move someone else's marker even if the table looks empty.
Returning your tray
Tray return is mandatory by law at most hawker centres, with clearly marked return points. Fines are enforced for leaving trays on the table, tourists included.

Popular stalls genuinely queue — join the back, and don't assume a short line means a bad stall; some of the best food here has the longest waits.
