A shophouse hotel is a restored two-or-three-storey heritage building — originally a ground-floor shop with living quarters above — converted into a small, characterful hotel. They're concentrated in Chinatown, Katong, and around Amoy Street, and trade scale for atmosphere.
What makes them different
Rooms are smaller than a modern tower hotel by design — original shophouse floor plates are narrow — but the trade-off is genuine architectural character: original five-foot ways, air wells, and period tile work that a new-build simply can't replicate.
Where to find them
- Amoy Street / Ann Siang Hill — the highest concentration, walkable to the CBD.
- Chinatown proper — closer to hawker food and temples, busier streets.
- Katong / Joo Chiat — Peranakan-style shophouses, further from the centre but more residential.
The trade-offs
Expect smaller rooms, occasionally quirky layouts, and street noise in busier stretches — in exchange for a level of character no international chain replicates. Most sit in the $$$–$$$$ range; this isn't typically a budget category.
