Marina Bay & the CBD
The postcard version of Singapore — skyline views, walkable to Gardens by the Bay, and close to most first-visit sights. It's also the most expensive base and can feel quiet and corporate after office hours. Good for a first-timer prioritising the big sights over neighbourhood atmosphere.
Orchard Road
The shopping-district default: malls, a wide hotel range from mid-range to five-star, and a central MRT interchange that puts everything else within easy reach. Less distinct character than Chinatown or Katong, but hard to beat for pure convenience.
Chinatown
Heritage shophouses, some genuinely excellent hawker food on your doorstep, and still only a few MRT stops from the centre. Busier and more touristed than it looks on paper, but a strong balance of atmosphere and convenience.
Katong & Joo Chiat
The Peranakan heartland — pastel shophouses, some of the best food in the city, a genuinely residential feel. The tradeoff is distance: it's a 20–30 minute MRT or bus ride from the main sights, so it suits a second visit or a longer stay more than a first 3-day trip.
Sentosa
Resort-mode: beaches, theme parks, and hotels built for a self-contained island stay. Worth it if a resort holiday is the point of the trip; a poor base if you want easy access to the rest of the city, since every trip back involves the cable car, boardwalk, or a bus.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Marina Bay / CBD | First-timers, big sights | Most expensive, quiet at night |
| Orchard Road | Convenience, shopping | Less distinct character |
| Chinatown | Heritage + food, still central | Busy, touristed |
| Katong / Joo Chiat | Peranakan food & atmosphere | Further from main sights |
| Sentosa | Resort holiday, beaches | Poor base for city sightseeing |
